Department of Plant Protection

About

At the same time as the establishment of the University of Guilan in 1977, plant protection was taught as a major in the field of undergraduate agricultural students. In 1993, the Department of Plant Protection officially began its activities with the admission of 28 undergraduate students. Then, two majors in agricultural entomology and plant pathology were introduced in 1996 and 2001, respectively. Finally, the Ph. D courses of the two given majors were established in the years 2008 to 2010. At present, there are 80 undergraduate students, 35 graduate students and 18 Ph.D. students in the Department of Plant protection who are being introduced with different aspects of this science. The research projects by academic staffs and graduate students (Both MSc and Ph. D) are granted by the research deputy in University of Guilan, Ministry of Agriculture of Iran and external fund providers.

Majors and Programs

The mission of the department of plant protein is to efficiently teach students of both undergraduate and post undergraduate students are trained the basic/applied aspects of Botany, General Entomology, General Plant Pathology, Mycology, Virology, Nematology, Orchard insect pests and pathogens, Crop insect pests and pathogens as well as integrated pest management. These courses make student ready to act as pest control agents in agroecosystems with emphasis on organic management. Moreover, academic staffs propose several projects to take care of pathologic and insect obstacles in agriculture by contracting governmental and private agencies.

Facilities and Equipment

  • Teaching

  • Research

Our department members are experts in different fields of plant protection and they are committed to scientifically interact with major outbreaks of crop pest and diseases in Guilan province. They conducted several research projects by different funders in framework of higher education thesis and research projects.
  • Publication

Journal of Plant Pest Research is an open access journal published by University of Guilan. It publishes papers on all aspects of pest science in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and stored products research.  Journal of Plant Pest Research is a quarterly journal which is published in Farsi with English abstract. The journal covers advances in control of pests and vectors of microbial diseases, the biology and ecology of pests and their antagonists, and the use of beneficial organisms in pest control. Besides arthropod pests, weeds, microbial pathogens, snails and vertebrate pests, and faunistic studies are covered. All papers being reviewed by at least two independent referees. This journal does not receive article processing charges (APCs) or submission charges (ASCs).
