Department of Geography

About

The department of geography located in the first floor of the faculty of literature and humanities. It was established in 2009 to support research and teaching related to geographical science. The Department of Geography is comprised of physical, natural and social scientists from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds. Currently, the department has 15 full-time faculty members and 485 students.
Our mission is to create, extend and disseminate applied and theoretical scientific knowledge of the Earth’s physical, natural and human systems and their interactions through scholarly research, teaching and service.

Department Values and Operating Principles

As geographers, we study the natural and social processes that shape and change our environment. Our courses examine the relationship between society and the natural world from a global and local perspective. Facing the current global challenge of urban and rural communities, we are planning to create economic development, yet maintain the sustainability of renewable resources and reduce income disparities. We have an interdisciplinary approach to studying the natural environment and are committed to addressing the current climate crisis through teaching and research.
We value high quality teaching and guidance in all disciplines and are committed to shared department governance.

  • Teaching

Understanding and learning geographic knowledge and applying it to sustainable development depends not only on the knowledge itself, but also on how it is taught and studied. Here at the University of Guilan, through our research and teaching, we strive for a critical and ethical approach to the natural environment and society’s relationship with it. Teaching methods include fieldwork, lectures, seminars, small-group learning, individual tutorials and group work.
  • Research

Our faculty members are researchers and authors with expertise in various geographical themes, streams, and regions. They are often young researchers familiar with new technologies who are interested in using their knowledge and expertise in teaching geography.
