About
The Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Guilan was established in September, 1979. For the first few years after its establishment, the department only offered General English courses to the students of other disciplines. However, in the Fall of 1988, students were, for the first time, admitted to study English Language Teaching, and this went on for almost a decade. In 1998, the department changed course by altering its name to “Department of English Language and Literature” and admitting students in this field of study. Since then, it has consistently offered admission to students who are interested in pursuing English Language and Literature as their major. In recent years, the department has also started admitting M.A. students majoring in English Literature, Linguistics, and Applied Linguistics, as well as Ph.D. students in the field of Applied Linguistics. Moreover, the department hopes to admit Ph.D. students in the fields of Literature and Linguistics in the near future. Currently, the department has 12 full-time faculty members and more than 40 adjunct lecturers.
Facilities and Equipment
Most of the classes in our department are held in two exclusive classrooms, Classroom 11 and Classroom 18, but our department offers courses in other classes, too.
The department also has two well-equipped language labs which are used for courses that require more interaction between the professors and the students. Language Laboratory 1 and 2 are equipped with top-notch audio-visual equipment, including more than 80 computer units, two video projectors, and two smart boards.

TeachingOur department acknowledges its primary duty of teaching students listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills in English. However, the department also endeavors to teach students a variety of cognitive skills which are essential for analyzing texts and synthesizing ideas. At the undergraduate level, we are determined to cover the necessary skills and subskills in English while also trying to impart our knowledge of critical reading and thinking to students. We are committed to teaching our students critical thinking so that they can have their unique perspectives on literature, culture, and life.

ResearchOn the graduate level, we offer students career- and research-oriented programs and hone their professional and life skills so that they are well-equipped to enter a competitive job market. Our facultymembers use their various areas of expertise to encourage students to do research in different fields. Our faculty members who specialize in literature offer our graduate students a unique opportunity to do research in Epistemology, Postmodern Literature, Postcolonial Literature, as well as Diasporic Literatures, among other things. Respected members of the faculty who specialize in EFL and TESOL guide graduate students in fields like SLA, 2nd Language Acquisition, and Teaching Methodology. Ultimately, our experts in the field of Linguistics give their students insight into Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Syntax, among other fields. Our commitment to the personal growth of our students, we believe, will ultimately coincide with our vision of community growth
